Honors College

The Honors College was established at the University of Indianapolis to promote academic excellence throughout the University. It is designed to provide academically challenging opportunities to all students who wish to strengthen their University education. For highly motivated and creative students, the Honors College offers classes, independent study, research under guidance of a faculty member, and leadership and service opportunities. The wide range of experiences associated with the Honors College affords students the opportunity to shape individualized programs and to exchange ideas with other outstanding students. The Honors College is open to students enrolled in all University majors and programs.

Honors Degree Requirements

To receive a baccalaureate degree "With Distinction," students must:

  1. register for a freshman Honors core course (HIST-102 HON, etc.)
  2. after completing the first semester, students may elect to apply for full admission to the Honors College.
  3. if accepted, students will complete 12 hours of Honors coursework in their sophomore and junior years, leaving three credit hours to be completed during the senior year.
  4. students must complete a three- to six-credit-hour Honors research project (HON-490) within the major field (or petition to do a project outside the major) as a capstone experience
  5. submit an Honors Portfolio in the senior year;
  6. earn an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher, with no grade lower than a B (3.0) counting toward Honors College credit.

To maintain membership in the Honors College, students are encouraged to take at least three honors credits (and preferably seven) per academic year.

Contact the College Faculty Committee at the beginning of the junior year to obtain detailed information on the process for submitting a project proposal. The Honors College Faculty Committee provides a copy of Honors Project Guidelines. Students are encouraged to begin thinking about their Honors projects early in their college career. Note: Students may register for HON-490 only after the Honors College Faculty Committee has approved the Honors project proposal.

Most of the classes listed below are offered on a regular basis. Please check the current class schedules for availability. In addition, any course can be taken for honors credit (as an Honors Option) with the approval of the instructor and the director of the Honors College.
