Courses in the Social Sciences Department acquaint the student, through the use of the scientific method, with determinants that affect human social behavior. The sociology curriculum focuses on human interactions and social institutions. Criminal justice courses benefit those who desire to enter, or advance in, careers in law enforcement or corrections. These programs offer students a choice of both academic and professional training in social science fields. Students are able to major in corrections, law enforcement, sociology, and social work.
The Phylis Lan Lin Program in Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The program prepares qualified students for entry into the profession as generalist practitioners. Formal application and admission to the social work major is required. Interested students should inquire at the program office, Room 216 of Good Hall, for information on prerequisites, requirements, and program standards.
Social Science majors may also elect to pursue concentrations in Community Organizing, Social Gerontology, and/or Social Research. A concentration gives students an opportunity to focus and extend their development of knowledge and skills in an area of growing importance. A concentration fulfills all elective requirements for Sociology majors and may fulfill some electives in other areas (see descriptions below).
The Social Sciences Department also offers a minor in Child & Youth Programs that is open to students with any University major. This minor provides courses and field-based experiences to prepare students to work in programs that educate and mentor children and youth outside conventional school settings.
